Common Roots ACOA Funding

On Friday August 5, 2022, the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Member of Parliament for Halifax West, came to Common Roots Urban Farm BiHi to announce funding and support for the farm. Minister Diab livestreamed the announcement on Facebook and Global News covered the event. The event also included speeches from Dave Rideout, CEO of MetroWorks and Sarah Burgess, Common Roots Urban Farm BiHi Coordinator.

Minister Diab made the announcement on behalf of the Minister of Official Languages, Ginette Petitpas Taylor, who is responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) which provides the funding. The government of Canada has granted Common Roots Urban Farm BiHi with $31,000 in funding.

The majority of funding is being put towards building a new shed. Burgess spoke about how important this is to the farm and how the new shed will greatly help both Common Roots employees and community members. A sum of the funding is also being invested in increasing the accessibility of the farm.

Minister Diab has been to Common Roots many times before this funding announcement and spoke many kind words in support of the farm throughout her speech. She noted the importance of Common Roots stating that the farm “brings community people together for a common purpose.” Diab noted that Common Roots Urban Farm is the centre of a community and put a big emphasis on the government of Canada’s support of this.
